Poker Dictionary
"That fish had a gut shot on a straight and won. The shark is now in the twilight zone."
When you play poker you will find out that a lot of specific poker terms are used. To ensure that you understand what these terms mean, you will find the most common poker terms and hand names in our Poker Dictionary:
Advertising
Deliberately show other players how you play through talking or showing your cards, with the intention to put them on the wrong track.
Ante
A bet that each player must place, before the hand is dealt, without the blinds. This is common in a later stage in tournaments.
Backdoor
Backdoor Flush and backdoor Straight (also called runner runner Flush / Straight) is an extra chance to make a Straight or a Flush by means of the two cards that have yet to come (The Turn and River).
Bad Beat
The loss of a hand while you had the strongest position by far. But (actually) due to bad play by the opponent, who was hoping for a miracle (and got), you got beat nevertheless.
Board
The visible shared cards on the table.
Button
The ring/round on the table that indicates the dealer position.
Call
To follow with the bet (bet) of the predecessor(s).
Check
Not undertaking action, so not placing a 'bet' (or if necessary fold).
Coin flip
Situation where you have almost equal chances to win. The profit goes to the person who has the most luck at that moment. Many players hate this.

Fish
Fish, someone from who you estimate that you can win from easily.
Gut shot
A little chance at for example a between card you need for a Straight.
Inside Straight Draw
A Straight-chance with which you need a between card. You have 9 10 Q K for example and the J still has to fall.
Limpen
To come along with the raised bet of your predecessor(s)
Nuts
To have the highest possible hand.
Overcards
The two cards in your hand and which are both higher than the cards on the table.
Rainbow
When 3 or 4 different colors (symbols) are on the table. For example, a Rainbow Flop can be any clubs, hearts and spades.
Raise
The doubling (increasing) of the highest bet.

Second nuts
To have the second highest hand.
Shark
Someone who is seen as a very strong player who is eating the 'fish'.
Tilt
The state where you are in after misfortune, with which you have lost control over yourself and your game. Because of this your game behaviour has changed into uncontrolled and bad play.
Toppair
A pair that you made with a card from your hand and with the highest card on the table.
Twilight Zone
To be in a certain state where you are not yet fully recovered from a setback or bad beat.
Under the Gun
The first position directly left of the "big blind". So the one who should speak first.
Undercards
The two cards in your hand and which are lower than the cards on the table.
Underdog
The player with the least chance to win.
Underpair
A pocket pair (eg 3-3) which is lower than all the cards on the table
